SOROTI RDC HANDS OVER MOTORCYCLES TO BOOST AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION SERVICES

Agricultural extension services in Soroti District have received a major boost following the handover of three motorcycles to extension workers serving the sub-counties of Asuret, Tubur, and Oculoi.

The motorcycles, procured under the Agricultural Extension Grant, were officially handed over on Friday by the Assistant Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Mr. Okia Emmanuel. The move is part of government’s efforts to improve service delivery and ensure farmers access technical support at the grassroots.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Mr. Okia said government has continued to prioritize agriculture as a cornerstone for rural transformation. He urged extension workers to use the motorcycles responsibly and to redouble their efforts in reaching farmers.

“Government is investing heavily in programs meant to uplift households out of poverty. These motorcycles are not for leisure; they are tools to help you reach farmers in the most remote villages. We expect to see improved service delivery and better adoption of modern farming methods across Soroti,” he said.

The Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of Soroti, Mr. Elly Piwang, echoed the call for accountability and professionalism among the extension staff. He emphasized that agriculture remains the backbone of the district and plays a critical role in improving household incomes.

“This is an opportunity for extension workers to prove their value. Farmers should feel the impact of your work in their gardens, their livestock, and ultimately in their household incomes. We want to see evidence that extension services are transforming livelihoods,” Mr. Piwang stressed.

District Production Officer Mr Enyaku James Michael noted that while Soroti has a strong agricultural base, service delivery has often been hampered by logistical challenges. The new motorcycles are expected to ease movement, enabling extension workers to monitor crop fields, advise on pest and disease management, and train farmers on enterprise selection.
