OPM DELIVERS 696 IRON SHEETS TO SOROTI TO SUPPORT STORM-AFFECTED SCHOOLS, CHURCHES, AND RESIDENCES

The Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) has donated a total of 696 iron sheets to Soroti District to support the roofing of public that were recently destroyed by heavy winds and storms.

The consignment was officially delivered to the Soroti District headquarters on Friday, July 18, 2025. The donation targets several institutions and individuals whose buildings suffered major damage due to the recent extreme weather conditions.

Beneficiaries of this government intervention include Omugenya Primary School, which will use the iron sheets to roof a staff house, Olio-Kamuda Primary School for the roofing of a teacher's house, roofing of a teacher’s house in Obyarai Primary and Takaramiam Primary school.

Other recipients include Global Harvest Church, which lost its roof during the storms, the residential house of Bishop Emeritus Echeru, and the home of Rev. Ekilu John. Additional individuals and institutions also benefited from the relief support.

While receiving the materials on behalf of the district, Mr. Moses Esatu, the Acting Principal Assistant Secretary (Ag. PAS), commended the Office of the Prime Minister for responding swiftly to the community’s urgent needs.

“We are truly grateful to the OPM for standing with the people of Soroti during this difficult time. These iron sheets will be used strictly for the intended purposes to ensure the affected institutions and individuals get the relief they need,” said Mr. Esatu.

Also present at the handover ceremony was the Assistant Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Soroti, Mr. Victor Mutai, who expressed appreciation for the government’s timely intervention.

He noted that several schools, churches, and individuals had earlier written to the district leadership seeking help after the destruction of their buildings.

“This support is a result of the appeals made through the district to the OPM. We are happy that the government listened and responded quickly. These iron sheets will help restore the roofs of schools, churches, and homes that were severely affected,” Mr. Mutai said.

He further emphasized the importance of ensuring that the donated materials reach the intended beneficiaries without diversion, adding that local authorities would closely monitor the distribution and use.

The donation is part of the government’s broader disaster response and recovery program, aimed at helping communities rebuild after natural calamities.
