TRANSFORMING LIVES THROUGH SMALL-SCALE IRRIGATION: THE INSPIRING STORY OF OKELLO SIMON

In the heart of Otatai Parish, Asuret sub-county, Soroti district, a remarkable success story is unfolding. Okello Simon, a visionary farmer, has harnessed the power of micro-scale irrigation to revolutionize his agricultural endeavors.

Supported by the Ugift Micro scale irrigation program, Okello's 2.5-acre farm has become a beacon of productivity and prosperity.

From Radio to Reality

Okello's journey began with a radio talk show that introduced him to the concept of micro-scale irrigation. Intrigued, he seized the opportunity, and with equipment worth 29 million shillings, he transformed his farm into a thriving enterprise. Today, he cultivates watermelons, tomatoes and cabbages, ensuring a bountiful harvest year-round.

A Game-Changer in Productivity

The irrigation system has doubled the growth rate of Okello's watermelon fruits, catapulting his farm to new heights. With orders pouring in from neighboring Kenya, Okello anticipates a staggering eight million shillings from his upcoming harvest this season.

Diversifying Success

Empowered with knowledge on mixed farming, Okello is expanding his operations to include dairy farming. This strategic move is significantly boosting his overall income, demonstrating the potential for diversified success through micro-scale irrigation which is in line with the four-acre model Presidents initiative since his farm is seated in four acres along Kyere-Serere road 400 meters away from Halycon High School.

A Testament to the U-Gift Project

Moses Echeku Okello, Ag, District Agriculture Officer, Soroti, applauds Okello's achievements as a shining example of the U-Gift project's effectiveness.

Echeku, who doubles as focal point person Ugift Micro Scale Irrigation projects, notes that Okello, is not an isolated case, as numerous farmers in the district are benefiting from micro-scale irrigation.

The Transformative Power of Irrigation

Okello's story showcases the profound impact of irrigation on livelihoods. His ability to cultivate crops during scarcity periods enables him to command higher prices, bolstering his income and financial stability.

This inspiring story underscores the potential of small-scale irrigation to revolutionize agriculture, empowering farmers like Okello Simon to achieve unprecedented success.
