SUCCESS FROM PDM FUNDING: VINCENT AKOL’S LIFE-CHANGING POULTRY JOURNEY

In the quiet village of Ocomai, Ocokican sub county in Soroti District, a remarkable story of transformation is inspiring many. Vincent Akol, is proof that government support, when utilized wisely, can create lasting change.

Through the Parish Development Model (PDM), Akol received funding that has completely turned his life around. In October 2023, Akol received one million shillings with a vision in mind and a determined spirit, he decided to invest the money in poultry farming.

He used the funds to purchase 200 chicks at 5,000 shillings each and also spent on constructing a small poultry house, buying feeds, and vaccinating the birds.

“I saw poultry as a fast-moving and profitable enterprise,” Akol explains. “It’s something I could manage from home while still attending to other responsibilities.”

His instincts were right. In just 1 year, the poultry project began yielding returns. Today, Akol has made a profit of 2.3 million shillings from the sale of chickens and eggs.

What started as a small farm now supplies birds to neighboring districts such as Serere, Amuria, Ngora, Kumi and even some parts of Karamoja.

“This business has changed my life completely,” he says. “My family no longer struggles to meet basic needs. We have food, the children are in school, and we even managed to save a little to expand the poultry structure.”

The financial stability that came with the poultry business has brought joy to his home. Akol’s wife, who initially doubted the venture, is now his biggest supporter. Together, they plan to grow the enterprise into a larger, more sustainable agribusiness.

Akol is grateful for the support from the government and is a strong advocate for the PDM program. He encourages fellow community members, especially youth and women, to take advantage of such opportunities.

“Don’t just sit and wait. The government has brought the resources closer to us. Let’s use them wisely,” he advises.

His story is a clear demonstration of how determination, when combined with the right support, can lead to success.

Through Vincent Akol’s eyes, the Parish Development Model is not just a program it’s a lifeline, bringing hope and prosperity to Uganda’s rural communities.
