SOROTI DISTRICT PRESENTS UGX 35 BILLION BUDGET FOR FY 2025/2026
Soroti District Secretary for Finance, Planning, Administration, and Investment, Samuel Eyangu, has presented a budget of UGX 35 billion for the financial year 2025/2026.
The budget was tabled before the district council on March 20, 2025, in a session chaired by Deputy Speaker Joshua Okello.
The proposed budget indicates a slight decline from the previous financial year’s budget of UGX 36 billion. According to Eyangu, the district has been struggling to meet its projected local revenue targets.
“We had initially projected to collect UGX 650 million in local revenue, but we only managed to realize UGX 222 million,” he said. He attributed the shortfall to various challenges, including weak enforcement mechanisms and limited revenue sources.
To address these challenges, Eyangu outlined new strategies aimed at boosting revenue collection. These include strengthening enforcement of tax collection from existing sources and identifying new revenue streams to expand the district’s financial base.
In terms of budgetary allocation, the education sector has been given top priority, with an allocation of UGX 14.84 billion. Other key areas of focus include health, infrastructure development, and agriculture.
The district anticipates generating UGX 700 million from local revenue sources, while central government grants are expected to contribute UGX 29 billion. Additionally, the district will receive UGX 3 billion from discretionary transfers and UGX 992 million from donor or external funding.
The budget is set to be discussed in the respective council committees before being presented for final approval in the next council sitting.
Eyangu emphasized the need for collaborative efforts among district leaders and stakeholders to ensure effective implementation of the budget and improved service delivery to the people of Soroti.
