Soroti District Local Government has approved eight women's groups to benefit from the Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Programme (UWEP) for the 2024/2025 financial year.
The Eight women groups were given a green light during the district Executive committee that was held on Monday 4th November, 2024, being chaired by District Chairperson Hon Edoru Simon Peter Ekuu.
Among the groups includes; Owalai Alakara women saving, credit, sheep and goats enterprise located in Owalai village in Ocokican sub county, Tubur Central Women with A mission group located in Tubur central cell in Tubur town council, Ocholai women’s empowerment in Oculoi sub county, Aribariba Enteko Women’s group in Lalle sub county,Gweri Asianut cattle buying and selling located in Gweri sub county, Agonga joint Action women’s group in Tubur sub county, Oculoi Women’s sheanut farmers Association in Oculoi sub county and Abiya Women’s Association in Awaliwal sub county.
Presenting this group for approval, the District Community Development Officer -DCDO, Margarete Acaya Emuria said that the groups will be forwarded to the Ministry of Gender, Labor and Social Development for the funding.
Acaya said a total of Uganda shillings forty-four million six hundred thirty-seven thousand shillings (44, 637,000) and each group is set to benefit with Ugx 5,579,625.
The Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Programme (UWEP) is an initiative of the Government of Uganda that is aimed at improving access to financial services for women and equipping them with skills for enterprise growth, value addition and marketing of their products and services.
The Programme is designed to address the challenges women face in undertaking economically viable enterprises including the limited access to affordable credit, limited technical knowledge and skills for business development, limited access to markets as well as information regarding business opportunities.
The programme is envisaged to increase participation of women in business development, increase their incomes, livelihood security and overall quality of life. The overall goal of the Programme is to empower Ugandan women to improve their income levels and their contribution to economic development.
