SOROTI DISTRICT LAUNCHES 23-BOREHOLE PROJECT TO BOOST RURAL WATER ACCESS

The leadership of Soroti District has officially launched the drilling of a borehole in Obyarai Village, Oculoi Sub-county, marking the beginning of an ambitious plan to construct 23 new boreholes during the 2024/2025 financial year.

This initiative is part of the district’s broader efforts to improve access to safe and clean water in rural communities, alleviate the burden of water scarcity, and reduce the prevalence of waterborne diseases.

The launch event, held on April 17, 2025, was officiated by the Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Mr. Bakak Ronald, who reiterated the government’s commitment to improving service delivery, especially in the water and sanitation sector.

“Our people deserve access to clean water close to their homes,” Mr. Bakak said. “This borehole is more than just a development project—it is a symbol of the government’s resolve to uplift the quality of life at the grassroots.”

District Chairperson, Hon. Edoru Simon Peter Ekuu, applauded the project for addressing a pressing community need. He also highlighted the district’s plans to expand water infrastructure not only for domestic use but also for agricultural production.

“This project is a vital step forward in addressing the water needs of Oculoi and other parts of Soroti,” he said. “We are planning to invest more in water for production to support farming and improve livelihoods.”

According to Mr. Oriekot Alex, the District Water Officer, Soroti currently has a water coverage rate of 86%. He expressed confidence that the 23 new boreholes will help close the remaining gap and improve equitable access.

“This borehole will reduce the time and distance residents especially women and children spend collecting water,” Mr. Oriekot said. “The new boreholes will help address water-stressed areas across the district.”

Mary Apio, a resident of Obyarai Village, expressed gratitude to the government, noting that the community had long relied on a spring well as their only water source.

In a related development, the district also commissioned the Adamasiko Rural Growth Centre (RGC) water system, which is expected to further improve water access in semi-urban areas.

The event was attended by sub-county leaders, members of the District Executive Committee (DEC), technical officers, and residents of Obyarai, who welcomed the development with optimism for better health and sanitation outcomes.
