EMPOWERING FARMERS THROUGH INNOVATIVE APPROACHES IN SOROTI DISTRICT
In a bid to enhance agricultural productivity and empower local farmers, agricultural extension staff in Soroti District underwent training on the Farmer Field Schools (FFS) methodology.
The two-day workshop, held from December 6th to 7th, 2024, at Tikitik Guest House in Soroti City, was organized by the district's production department with facilitation from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
Mr. Okello Moses Echeku, the District Agricultural Officer (DAO), emphasized the importance of FFS as a dynamic approach to agricultural education. "Farmer Field Schools enable farmers to tailor agricultural practices to the specific conditions of their fields," he said.
Okello explained that the training equips extension staff to implement FFS under the Microscale Irrigation Program. Through this initiative, farmers will receive comprehensive support, including guidance on on-farm water management, irrigated farming, value addition, marketing, and transitioning farming into a viable business.
He further noted that the program aligns with the government’s Parish Development Model (PDM), particularly its focus on farmer training. "This initiative revives a proven approach that provides practical benefits to our farmers," Okello added.
Mr. Mark Olupot, one of the facilitators, highlighted the practical nature of the FFS approach. "Extension staff will design programs for farmer groups that involve routine, hands-on sessions facilitated throughout an entire production cycle," he said.
These sessions aim to enhance agricultural knowledge, improve farm productivity, and encourage sustainable farming practices.
The district leadership also underscored its commitment to supporting farmers. Hon. Edoru Simon Peter Ekuu, the district chairperson, praised the initiative and urged extension staff to utilize the training fully. "This program reflects our dedication to empowering farmers and promoting sustainable agriculture," Edoru stated.
Background
The Farmer Field Schools training is part of the broader Microscale Irrigation Program implemented by the Government of Uganda through the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) and local governments.
By integrating FFS into the program, farmers gain essential skills in water management, farming techniques, and market-oriented strategies, ensuring the sustainability and effectiveness of their agricultural practices.
This initiative marks a significant step toward transforming agriculture in Soroti District, empowering farmers with knowledge, tools, and support to enhance productivity and resilience in a rapidly changing environment.
