In a significant boost to healthcare services, Soroti district officials Monday 13th January 2025 commissioned the newly constructed Outpatient Department (OPD) block at Ojom Health Centre II, located in Oculoi sub-county.

This development is expected to enhance healthcare delivery and improve access to quality medical services for residents in the area.

The construction of the UGX 162 million OPD block was undertaken by OPED Construction Company during the 2023/2024 financial year.

The commissioning event was graced by several key dignitaries, including the Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Mr. Ronald Bakak, who officiated the ceremony. He was joined by the District Chairperson, Hon. Edoru Simon Peter Ekuu, members of the district executive, the District Internal Security Officer (DISO), the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Mr. Elly Piwang, the district engineering team, and members of the Ojom community.

Dr. Charles Okadhi, the Soroti District Health Officer, noted that Ojom Health Centre II has long struggled with inadequate infrastructure while serving a population of over 21,000 people.

“This new block will significantly ease the strain on the health center’s resources and allow us to provide better care to our patients,” he said.

Dr. Okadhi also revealed that Ojom Health Centre II is among several health facilities, including Aukot, Ocokican, Awaliwal, and Lalle, slated for upgrades to Level III health facilities.

Hon. Edoru Simon Peter Ekuu emphasized the strategic importance of Ojom Health Centre II, which serves communities in Oculoi, Katine, and Arapai sub-counties.

“The addition of the OPD block is a transformative step. It’s not just about infrastructure but ensuring that our people have access to timely and quality healthcare services,” he remarked.

Community members expressed their gratitude for the new development. “We have waited a long time for improvements at this health center,” said Grace Auma, a resident of Oculoi.

“Now, we are hopeful that we will no longer have to travel long distances for basic medical services.”

Deputy RDC Mr. Ronald Bakak lauded the government’s financial commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure.

“The government of Uganda has invested heavily in healthcare to ensure service delivery is equitable and effective,” he stated. “This OPD block is a testament to our commitment to providing adequate structures that match the needs of our people.”

Mr. Bakak further urged the community to take responsibility for maintaining the new facility. “This health center belongs to you. Let us work together to ensure it remains in good condition for future generations,” he appealed.

The commissioning of the OPD block marks a milestone in the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen healthcare infrastructure in rural areas. With this development, residents of Oculoi sub-county and neighboring communities can look forward to improved healthcare services closer to home.

As Soroti District takes this step forward, it sends a clear message: investment in healthcare is not just about building structures but building healthier communities.
