Fish farmers in Soroti district have received 30,000 fingerlings through the Operation Wealth Creation-OWC program

Fish farmers in Soroti district have received 30,000 fingerlings through the Operation Wealth Creation-OWC program and the National Agricultural Advisory Services-NAADs, to boost production.

The fingerlings 30,000 fingerlings for the African cat fish were distributed to over 26 fish farmers at district headquarters on Tuesday morning in the routine supply and stocking exercise by the district production and marketing department.

The restocking comes at the time when several districts in Teso are grappling with a decline in the fish catch caused by the negative effects of poor fishing methods.

Simon Peter Edoru Ekuu, the LC V Chairperson of Soroti district commended the government for the initiative.

Edoru said, as a district they are determined to step up prospects of aquaculture farming. He cautioned the beneficiaries against mishandling the fingerings.

Meanwhile Jessica Florence Akiteng the Secretary Production called on Farmers to always consult technical people.

“I want ask you, now today you have received these fingerlings, please I urge to always ask for technical guidance from the District Production Department to better you farming practices,”

Among the groups that received the fish fingerlings include “Eroko Ican” Fish Farmers Association, “Obutei” Youth Farmers, “Ayama” Fish Farmers Association and “Obur” Water shed.
